28487 and 28488 are said to be "backlit". What exactly does that mean? They look fine to me. Can I fix them?

When a photo is backlit, the light hitting the subject is from behind. This produces a shadow and sometimes a silhouette of the subject. To avoid this, for the most part, stand on the most illuminated side of the subject or try to have the sun to your back. I have tried to fix a few backlit photos that I took but what usually happens is since the background is already bright, it tends to get too bright and distracting.
It does seem like the standards are getting stricter and I, to, have seen worse lit and darker photos than yours get accepted.
