Default what causes,,,

I was taking a head-on shot and the front light was getting distorted in every pic, ditch lights seemed ok and the rest of the pic was focused, it wasn't till the engine had a slight angle from me that it cleared up,
What causes this? I'm using a rebel xti and had it happen while in auto focus, using manual mode and automatic,
Thanks
Bill

Below the message body is a "Manage Attachments" option. You have to resize it pretty small. I usualy just Save for Web in this case.

The headlights look pretty common (aka, normal) to me.
