Holiday Photo for the Forum group(Opinion?)

A small town holiday scene recently taken 52 minutes after sunset. I was pretty happy with it but since it was rejected I thought I would see what others thought, hope this is proper use of forum.

Add some to the left the train and it should get on. I like the shot and I like the Christmas lights. Special time of the year and these types of photo are limited to the season. Yes its appeal is going to be stronger this time of the year and not so much when its warmer but it has a train in it and these types of photos are just as worthy. If I had the time, I'd start a Christmas album. Hopefully one day I can mark this type of photo off my bucket list. Thanks for posting as it gives us something to discuss and dissect. I started the Then & Now post in hopes to get some new discussion going but apparently the subject is not interesting as the fish are not biting.

I agree on adding some real estate to the left of the train....if you have it. I would also suggest cropping a bunch tighter on the right. Lose the white house. It's nice, but you don't need it and you still retain the gazebo and the Christmas Tree. The scene would also balance a little better. You could probably also lose a bit of sky. I tend to use a wide crop, particularly when the sky is featureless. With some adjustment on the crop I think it has a shot.

Nice! Still too much sky for me, however. I would crop 3:5. I use that crop a ton on RP.

Good idea, I cropped left and bottom since there were 2 junk cars on bottom. typically I use a selection first keeping original ratio to not get too far off.

If you can reshoot it when Santa and his reindeer are overhead, I think it would have a reasonable chance of getting in ; )

I like it as is - nice scene. Some "too much sky" issues can be fixed by filling the sky with some interest - doubt you'll catch Santa, but maybe some interesting clouds at some point? Shouldn't be required, but certainly more appealing. I've found stepping back (way back) and using a zoom lens works, though this does not seem an option at this location. A drone is an option for those types of conditions - lots of stuff I could never get on, others have with an overhead angle. Lol - FLICKR is an option people seem to take, too.

Thanks Mitch, a little TIC is fun. Taken from wooden stairway on side of this old Feed Mill or Freight house. The steps are slanting down, covered with ice so at 71 tread lightly and hang on to railing one step at a time.

Good job. A big improvement over the rejected one. (Of course, the snow didn't hurt either.) This is so much nicer than "holiday trains" with the lights strung on the power/cars, which, IMHO, look ridiculous.
