Default Audio

I have started looking around for a reasonably priced external microphone to use while filming trains rather then my cameras internal mic. I'm looking for something that will provide crisp clear sound but also performs well reducing wind noise living on the front range in Colorado wind is pretty common around here. What microphones would you guys suggest I look into as some options?

Thank You,

Josh

Define 'reasonably priced'...

I've used a Rode Stereo VideoMic since 2007, paid $240-250 new. Its mono brother is cheaper, but I like the 'train traveling through the speakers' effect I get from the stereo version. It comes with a fur windscreen that I've used in wind gusts up to 30-40 mph with good results.

I was hoping to get something that does stereo I agree the sound of the train moving through is something I want to have in my videos. As for price I'm on a bit of a budget with spring tuition looming very close so I was hoping to stay under $200

Thanks

Looking at B&H Photo's site, there's a couple of models that fall well under $200 (and some under $100). Look carefully though - I used to have an $80-ish Sony external mic in my 8mm days, but I'd swear that thing was so sensitive that it would pick up the sound of me looking at my tripod, never mind panning with it. Also, it was so small it couldn't accomodate anything beyond a small foam windscreen, which didn't help with wind all that much.

Couldn't say to be honest - I've only had experience with the aforementioned Sony (ECM-MSD1 I believe) and my current Rode SVM. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
