"Here comes The Silverton up from Durango, here comes The Silverton shoveling coal!" I wonder how many RP'ers can remember the 1970s song by Bill Fries (alias C.W. McCall), which was my personal introduction to the legendary train operated by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Too bad it took me over 30 years to actually get out to Durango and ride it. The train in this shot is one of the line's annual Fall Photo Specials, performing a run-by for us at the remote Needle Creek, deep in the San Juan National Forest. The ride from Durango to Silverton is definitely something every serious railfan should add to their "bucket list".
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
