Stiff winds blowing down the east side of Marias Pass have a habit of toppling lightweight freight cars or ripping empty intermodal containers from stack trains. Midvale Creek Trestle features a substantial steel windbreak, seen here as Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder approaches the station at East Glacier.
This train, which runs between Chicago and Seattle and Portland, takes its name from James J. Hill, who founded the Great Northern Railroad and extended it from Minnesota to the Pacific Coast.
