Remarks & Notes |
Several former South Eastern & Chatham Railway locos including D1 and F1 4-4-0s stand on the bridge over the River Thames outside Cannon Street station (right) in c1928. In the foreground the Eagle Line paddle steamer PS Crested Eagle loads up with passengers at the Old Swan Pier in the City of London. The PS Crested Eagle, built in 1925, was one of the small ships sent to the Dunkirk evacuation in May 1940. She was unlucky and received a direct bomb hit between her funnel and engine room, her bunker oil catching fire with the loss of over 300 lives. Her wreck remains to this day on the beach at Dunkirk.
