Centerbeam Attacks Covered Hopper
On the morning of May 21, 2010, the UP MPDPW manifest train derailed as it was arriving at Albany yard. An empty centerbeam, the 15th car from the end of the train, derailed as it crossed over from the Pass track to 1 track. It rolled eastward and came to rest on its side with the top rear edge contacting the side of a covered hopper sitting on 2 Track Extension, just north of the Highway 99E overpass.
The last 13 cars were sitting on the mainline, and the PNWR Oregon Electric yard switch crew was called to pull the cars off the mainline and onto the Santiam Lead, leaving them between Pine St. and Geary St. crossings. Amtrak Cascades #500 and the UP ZLCBR-20 intermodal train were both delayed for about 30 minutes.
