Norfolk Southern Train P22P005 with Engine #4622 and two coupled rail cars was struck head-on by NS Freight Train 192P005 on the tracks leading to the Avondale's Stevens Steam Plant on January 6, 2005 around 2:40 AM. NS Train 192P005 was operating from North Augusta Georgia to Graniteville, South Carolina and consisted of two SD60 Engines - NS#6653 and NS#6593 along with 25 loaded cars and 17 empties.
Resulting from the derailment, a chemical car filled with liquid chlorine erupted causing a poisonous Chlorine cloud. This incident killed nine people and injured more than 250 while displacing more than 5,000 families from their homes for longer than a week.
This badly damaged GP59 engine that was built in November 1989 now resides at the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA awaiting its fate.
