Today's pop quiz: What VIA train is this? Well, before there was a Rocky Mountaineer, today's private-operator luxury cruise train, VIA ran its own version, called Rockies By Daylight, establishing the daylight-only format with an overnight stop that's still used. Here we see the first westbound run at the west end of Glacier siding after meeting an eastbound freight, distant. Rumors that it would run behind F units were, disappointingly, mistaken, but you can't argue with the scenery. And perhaps if VIA had put together something more upscale than the tentative, coach-and-box-lunch production seen here, they'd still have the market today.
