The 12.13 mile Graham County Railroad operated between Topton and Robbinsville from the wye at Junction, the interchange with the Southern Railroad’s Murphy freight only branch. Graham County Shay 1926, s/n 3299, was built by Lima in May, 1926 for the Tallahassee Power Company as their No. 10. She was sold to GCRR in September, 1940. After a runaway log car damaged the smokebox and front end of GCRR 1926, parts from narrow gauge shay 3229 were used for repairs, including 3229's number plate. The narrow gauge shay had operated on a backwoods lumber portion of Graham County/Bemis Lumber Company, the Buffalo-Snowbird Railroad. Eventually, Graham County Shay 1926 was sold to Cass Scenic Railroad for parts. This image from my collection shows Graham County 1926 at a rural grade crossing with a very lucky kid getting a ride!
