Lotsa Curves? You bet! To borrow a line from Curt Massey's Petticoat Junction Theme, the V&T Virginia City Line does indeed have lots of curves. In fact, back in the day, it was known as the "Crookedest Railroad in America". As the line climbs the hill from Carson City to Virginia City, it follows the contours of the hills to the west of mining towns such as Silver City and Gold Hill. There are enough degrees of curve in this line to make seventeen complete circles!. As seen in this photo, all of that meandering creates some amazing vistas for the folks who were lucky enough to ride the line. Fortunately, anyone who is willing to travel to the Reno/Carson City area can still have this experience. The Virginia & Truckee is a beautiful railroad and well-worth a trip to the legendary Comstock Region.
