48s28 and 48s34, operated by Silverton and Southern and still carrying their old Silverton Tramway blue & yellow colour scheme, arrive at Broken Hill Yard with a loaded ore train. Silverton Tramway purchased its first diesel locomotive in December 1960 and it was numbered 27 with nos. 28 and 29 arriving shortly after. Their colour scheme was that of crimson with white company lettering and lining. These three Goodwin-Alco units replaced the four W class 4-8-2 steam locomotives which were then retired after only 10 years of service.
Silverton bought several 48 class locos from FreightCorp in 1994, those being 48s32 to 48s37. All are now classed 48s with their original Silverton numbers included.
