On first sight, this looks like a scene of decline and dereliction, but despite the engine being almost 60 years old, this is actually the start of a new dawn for train services in the south of Chile. EFE is experimenting with an occasional overnight train one weekend a month from Santiago and Temuco, restoring a connection that has been lost for 5 years. As the overhead wires are no longer energised, a veteran GE / ALCO "shovelnose" locomotive has been roped in and it is seen here amid the dereliction at Temuco awaiting its return working to Santiago on the third run of this train.
