In the final mile of the journey from Big Run Landfill to the junction at NC Cabin on the ex-C&O Lexington Subdivision, the pusher of Y206-18 eases off the throttle entering the modified Ashland Tunnel. Regular traffic on this 11-mile branch line will cease on Wednesday, when the last empty trash train departs Big Run Landfill for the final time, and the rail yard is gated & locked for good after a long legal battle with a group of citizens due to the landfill's putrid odor, potentially bringing an end to the 140-year old rail line.
Any and all pictures from Collis P. Huntington's "Gateway to the West," Chesapeake & Ohio's mainline from Ashland to Lexington, KY. Reduced from a 100+ mile route, down to about 15 miles.
