The future of the Providence and Worcester Railroad is unknown. The Genesee and Wyoming announced it would acquire the P&W in late 2016, which may result in the loss of P&W's passenger equipment and their passenger trains. In late October 2016, the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts partnered with the P&W and the Valley Railroad to run a trip from Worcester, MA to Groton, CT on P&W's Norwich Branch, and then on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor to Old Saybrook, CT. At Old Saybrook, the 2 P&W diesels were removed, and VALE 3025 was added. With steam in the lead, the train proceeded to the end of the line at Goodspeed, and then the train returned to Worcester that night. The trip included one runby at Chester, where 3025 is seen chugging past the photographers. The interesting factor is the P&W coaches remained on the train for the entire trip, even on the Valley Railroad. Thanks for the Valley Railroad, the Providence and Worcester Railroad, and the Mass Bay RRE for a great weekend.
