The late afternoon sun illuminates the rich tones of the coal bearing strata in the now defunct eastern part of the open pit at Sandaoling, whilst a "fotter" captures the action in the remaining hour or so of light. Steam trains in action include JS8081, with a rake of empty wagons, seen pushing to the loading bay in the western active part of the pit on its way to collect coal. Meanwhile, JS8197, makes haste in the opposite direction laden with coal for the wash plant. As of early 2017, ten 2-8-2 JS Class steam locomotives are still active at Sandaoling, but for how much longer is the question.
