BNSF 2741 and mate handle a work train containing ballast cars and a tie car on main 1, offering support to the clean up effort of a grain train that derailed May 1 at about MP 17.5 on main 1 on BNSF's funnel at Cocolalla between Hauser and Sandpoint, ID. Some trains were detoured via the Spokane International (UP), including Amtrak Empire Builders. The eastbound Empire Builder arrived in Whitefish, MT about 3.25 hours late on the AM of May 2. The line's main 2 was reopened about 36 hours after the derailment which occurred about 6 am May 1. On May 3, BNSF was still detouring some traffic on the SI. The funnel can see about 60 trains a day normally. At the time of the photo at least 7 trains were backed up westbound between the site and Kootenai Falls siding, and 5 eastbounds in near proximity. The first train through was an eastbound grain empty, interesting as 4 Z trains were in the nearby back up.
