Remarks & Notes |
On the longest day of the year in 2018 in the northern hemisphere, Amtrak’s eastbound California Zephyr rounds Big 10 Curve just west of Rocky on Union Pacific’s former Rio Grande main line through Colorado. In the background is the city of Denver, which is 16 miles away “as the crow flies” on this clear Thursday afternoon. The old hopper car windbreak has done its job well against the fierce winds that sometimes blow off the mountains at this location—so well, that the years of shelter from the gales has allowed seeds to take hold and trees have almost taken over the wind breaking duties. |
