Inside the Gotthard tunnel, a special picture taken with permission. A charter train with iconic Gotthard locomotive Ae 6/6 # 11402 "Uri" and car B # 5560 from Erstfeld to Airolo stopped in the middle of the 15 kilometer long tunnel, at kilometer point 77.800, where there was a remote controlled track change station (4 switches) from 1946 till about 1980. Afterwards two double crossovers existed in the third points of the tunnel. The locomotive with the name of the canton Uri is still on the territory of the canton Uri, the "frontier" to the canton Ticino is at kilometer point 80.690. On the right side some meter behind the locomotive (not visible) is a large recess in the tunnel wall, which was visited by the guests of the train. The Gotthard tunnel was built from 1872 to 1882 by the Gotthard Railway Company (GB). Since the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) in 2016, there are only very few trains in the old summit tunnel, mainly 1 Regio Express hourly in each direction.
