March 10th witnessed a fleeting glimpse of what passenger service would look like again on the ONR south of Cochrane as the railway ran “test” train 999 from Cochrane to North Bay and back again, seen here making great time at Temagami on its return trip north. These rails had not seen such a train in almost 10 years since the Northlander’s demise, its final run Sept 28, 2012 when the Liberal government cut funding for the service. Running a hair over 5 hours from Cochrane to North Bay, the ONR demonstrated it’s certainly still more than capable of running the service at a high level. It’s undoubtedly a tough road ahead, but hopefully this was a step in the right direction with anecdotes from locals along the way illustrating there is still a strong demand and need for rail service in the north, and for their beloved Northlander to maybe just return one day...
