The Pilatus cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad to the Pilatus is by far the steepest rack railroad in the world. It is the only one to use the Locher system, in which two cogwheels engage laterally with a rack, and horizontal rollers also engage under the rack to prevent the vehicle from climbing. Railcar Bhe 1/2 # 24 is running down through the Eselwand (donkey-wall) in a grade of 48.0 % with 9 km/h maximum, leaving the 50 meter long Eselwand tunnel. The journey is 40 minutes down, and 32 minutes up. Maximum velocity upwards is 12 km/h.
