For the last few years, CSX has not been able to decide what to do with the line from Montgomery down through Dothan and Thomasville to Waycross. They don't seem to want it, but can't seem to let it go, either. Back in 1975 it was still a pretty 'big time' line by Deep South standards, with several freights each way daily, as well as Amtrak's Floridian and the Louisville section of Auto-Train. This photo gives an idea of the freight service at the time, with four U36Bs bringing a northbound freight into S&NA yard for a hand-off to L&N.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
