Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449 bore Lima Locomotive Company builders plate #7817; her sister engine #4447, also a two-cylinder Northern-type coupled here behind her, carried the diamond Lima plate #7845. Both were born in 1941. Eight more GS-4 steam locomotives were to emerge after them before the following year elapsed, plus the two “top-flight” roller bearing “Golden State” engines, the GS-5’s 4458 and 4459.
