To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Delaware & Hudson painted two locomotives in a patriotic red, white and blue paint scheme: U23B 1776 and RS-3 1976. Here we see D&H 1976 sitting outside the diesel Colonie Shops in Watervliet NY, nearly two years after the Bicentennial. This engine was built by ALCO in September 1952 as D&H 4112, and in the early 1970s was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen with an ALCO 251 prime mover and the short hood was lowered (among other changes). (Watervliet, New York – June 24, 1978). Photographer unknown, Craig Walker collection
