Maintaining the vigil. A Union Sentry stands guard over the coffin of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, in the aft compartment of the Presidential Car "United States."
This 2022 re-enactment was conducted at the Harrisburg, Lincoln & Lancaster Railroad, on the grounds of Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, PA, on the 157th anniversary of the date on which President Lincoln's funeral train passed this very spot. As I understand it, the interior of the replica of the "United States" represents the as-built configuration of the car, with sitting rooms on either end and a state room for the President in the center. For the actual funeral of President Lincoln, I believe that the stateroom was removed and that the coffins of both the President and his son Willie, who had died 3 years earlier, were carried in the center of the car, not in the aft compartment as depicted here.
