Pan Am was a very interesting, if often troubled railroad. It was born from a railroad in a similar situation, and never quite emerged from the problems that plagued its predecessor, Guilford. However, at its best, it embodied all the trappings of a classic New England railroad. I didn't get to visit it very often or explore some of the more obscure portions of the regional, but I'm very glad to have seen it in what could be called its prime, before CSX arrived!
