The Sunset Limit has just crossed the Mississippi River outside of New Orleans. The train is only 35" into their 1995 mile trip from New Orleans to Los Angeles. The Mississippi River bridge, called the Huey P. Long Bridge, was built in 1935 and sits 152 feet above the water. Highway 90 also crosses the river with the railroad between lanes. The highway bridge is 8,076 feet long, while the railroad bridge is a whooping 22,996 feet (4.3 miles) long. The bridge was named for the late Governor Huey P. Long, who was assassinated on September 8 , 1935. The train is about to West Bridge Jct and end of NOPB trackage.
