Beach Bound, Coney Island. On Saturday, July 8, 2023, the sold out New York Transit Museum R-9 "Beach Bound, Coney Island" was operated to the delight of passengers and subway fans. This is the first of several ticketed "Nostalgia Specials" that will be operated this year in addition to a program of regular fare admission events. The R-9 class was composed of 11 orders that produced 1,703 passenger cars (and several additional orders for non-revenue cars) built by American Car and Foundry (ACF), Pullman, and Pressed Steel for the City of New York and Board of Transportation with minor variations from 1930-1940 and operated until the last car was retired from revenue service in March 31, 1977. Today, there are still a number of them that alternate between operating and stationary display for the Transit Museum, as well as permanent residents of other museums. The train is passing through the 86 Street-2nd Avenue Station before the excursion began for the day.
