Montana's Busiest Station. Webb Rail's former Northern Pacific Railway Budd built Pullman dome/slpr 313 (WEBX 801044) and former Northern Pacific Railway Budd built dome/coach 549 (WEBX 801045) were on the rear of Amtrak Train 8 (Empire Builder) on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 as it departed the Tudor Revival style former Great Northern Railway Passenger and Freight Depot and Division Office in Whitefish, Montana station. Opened in 1928, it was used by antecedent railroads until the 1980s. Instead of razing the structure, the process of its restoration was undertaken by the Stumptown Historical Society beginning with its transfer from Burlington Northern in 1990. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and in 2011, Amtrak added a new concrete platform that includes an electric snow melting system. In 2021, the station was used by over 30,000 Amtrak Empire Builder passengers, more than 4 times any other single station in the State of Montana.
