Monument to an Idea. While running laps on the museum's loop track, Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0 no. 20 passes behind the Dome Car Monument at the Colorado Railroad Museum. The monument was originally constructed in 1950 by the D&RGW and EMD as a tribute to the invention of the dome car, which allowed passengers to better enjoy the scenic views on the railroad's California Zephyr train. It was erected across the river from Grizzly Siding in Glenwood Canyon; where the eastbound and westbound California Zephyrs made their scheduled meet. Constructed of native stone set in concrete, with rail used for internal reinforcement. The stainless steel dome car was removed in the 1970s due to damage from being used for target practice. Monument became endangered by construction of I-70 in the 1980s. The Colorado State Highway Department donated the monument base and the D&RGW donated the dome car to the Colorado Railroad Museum, both of which arrived at the museum in 1985.
