Sunset at Lava Loop. After a day of shooting under changeable skies and occasional light rain showers, the patrons on the 2015 Historic Transport Preservation (HTP) Rio Grande Charter all hoped that the sky would clear for a sunset shot at Lava Loop. Alas, when our train arrived at the loop, we all knew we had a better chance of hitting the lottery than we did of seeing a glorious sunset. But sometimes, when nature gives you lemons, the lemonade can be quite tasty, as we found out in short order. The combination of the ragged, backlit clouds, the dark locomotive and its string of tanks, and the sagebrush foreground made for a very pretty dusk image of our train transiting the Lava Loop.
Pictures taken with the strong contrast between Rail and Light in Dawn/Dusk/Sunrise or Sunset.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
