What a sight, an express train steamlocomotive blasting out of a tunnel portal! The former german (Deutsche Bundesbahn) 4-6-2 01 # 202 of the association "Pacific 01 202" in Lyss/Switzerland, made a "show run" at the north portal of the Simplon tunnel. Tunnel I (single bore) was built from 1898 to 1905 and is 19803 meter long from Iselle di Trasquera/Italy to Brig/Switzerland. Simplon tunnel II (on the right) was bored from 1912 to 1921 and is 19823 meter long. Both were the longest tunnels worldwide over decades, electrified from begin with 3000 V 16 Hz 3-phase current. In 1930 electrification was changed to the usual 15000 V 16,7 Hz AC. Steamlocomotives are not allowed to go through the tunnel, so this was a shunting manoeuvre within Brig station, because the entrance signals are placed inside the tunnel.
