After the grade separation project at Grand Island was completed in the 1990's, the diamonds at Fremont were left as the only such at-grade crossing on the Union Pacific's Overland Route mainline in the state. On a perfect June morning in 2016, the rails of both the BNSF and UP are occupied. A northbound BNSF manifest on the former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy line between Lincoln, NE and Sioux City, IA is just visible through the trees as it waits its turn and an eastbound UP coal train rolls through town.
