Following the tests on the experimental train Fastech 360 S, JR East developed the E5 Series for the expanding network in the future. The train adopted the arrow-line design nose profile, with a maximum operating speed of 320km/h. The first unit entered service in 2011, operating the newly launched Hayabusa service on Tohoku Shinkansen. They have gradually become the main fleet on Tohoku.Hokkaido Shinkansen.
