Crop V. Crap

How would you crop this? I like it as is.

Tough one.... maybe a bit off the top and off the right.

JRMDC 04-26-2014 10:27 PM

Conventionally speaking, it probably would be better if you cropped the bottom so as to dump the Anderson sign, both because it is one of the photo-bomb sort of intrusions and because it give a less squarish crop which I think suits the scene better.

But I don't think the change is so important that I would have rejected it, I would consider it well within the range of personal preference and so the screeners should not be objecting to shots like this.

Joe

I took some off the top and left side. I think it helps concentrate the viewer's eyes.

I like this view of short line railroading, and think all the orange is cool.

I think it's worth going back for another time for more interesting light. i.e. early or late sun.

Sorry for my water mark!

That's what I would do, but what do I know...

Cut to just below the tree line so none of that hazy blown out sky is seen, and then just to the right of that far right telephone pole, or maybe even just to the left of that pole

Shot needs more contrast too, and afterwards it might require you play with the levels some

JRMDC 04-26-2014 11:06 PM

Dennis, I can now see where removing that bit at the bottom removed the part of the nearest freight car that faces the viewer. That helps a lot and preserves the Anderson sign.

I would do it like this:

Ron's crop is definitely cleaner. I had considered it but went with the poles for they gave more sense of place.

Actually, Ron's crops wins because I forgot how to embed photos here. (Again)

Joe the Photog 04-27-2014 12:58 AM

I tried for more like Dennis had before I saw Ron's, but they got it for Unlevel Horizon. I do like the poles to the right. Plus, if you get rid of the poles, you start cutting off the cars sitting behind and beside the two locomotive set.

troy12n 04-27-2014 12:59 AM

It does look like it's leaning right a little, ccw that up

nikos1 04-27-2014 03:12 AM

This spot is meant for verticals imo, would have worked better if the Belton unit wasnt LHF. I do like Ron's take on it though.

Congrats Joe.

I like the crop. Obviously, the poles MAKE the shot! :-D

Joe the Photog 04-27-2014 02:06 PM

I appreciate all the responses. This i one time I wish I ould have been in two places at once. Being on ground level would have got me some good vantage points for the meet as well.

Thanks, Dennis! Sometimes it takes a few attempts. I didn't even notice the unlevel until they brought it to my attention.

Sure Joe.

I doubt anyone will believe me now but in the crop version I did, I had leveled it as well. :-)

Congrats there Joe!

My 2005 self might have agreed with you.

But my 2014 se;f thought the side of the building near the highway was pretty interesting, too.
