I'd say it's the possible cause in the same way that falling rain possibly causes you to get wet if you're standing in it.

Well the reason I say possible is because this car was isolated from any other derailed cars by at least 25 cars. The wheel set had visible signs of overheating and having a fracture in it for an extended period of time. There was rust visible inside the wheel that broke along some of the fracture line so it had been fractured long enough for rust to form inside the fracture. So it’s possible it caused the derailment or that this compromised wheel just gave out under the stress of the emergency brake application caused by the derailment.
