This appears to be near Buford, WY. The clear stack on the 4-8-8-4 tells me it working very hard and efficiently. This is a rare shot on so many levels.

I notice the headlights are not lit, In another great shot you posted from 1964 the headlights on the moving train were lit. I have noted that, at some point, the railroads did start using headlights during the day and I wonder if it was all at the same time, railroad by railroad or just haphazardly. This is somewhat from sheer curiosity and somewhat due to model lion the 1954 era.

It might be that the lights are not on because the train is stopped.

Great shot. The Veranda's didn't get much in the way of fanfair that the 8500's did.
