ICG leadership had to be stupid to sell this line, IC kicked themselves in the butt when they couldn't by it back.

strange looking bridge?

Great scene, David, and the first I've seen from this period. Sport, the bridge is a combination rail/highway bridge, hence the odd appearance. The highway portion (US 80) is now closed and not publicly accessible to cars or pedestrians.

I worked in Monroe, LA for a couple weeks in 1983, and the line was in poor shape and light on traffic. There was already a little intermodal, but I don't think there were more than 4-6 trains a day, and speeds were low with a goodly amount of rock and roll going on. The line out of the Miss Valley to Jackson was tough, and getting across IC in Jax was a problem, but other than that, the line just looked like it was the perfect candidate for what KCS finally did. Great to see this transformation, rather than the loss or downgrading that happened to so many other lines.

I love this bridge! In 1959, when I was 5, we pulled a mobile home over it as we relocated to Tinker AFB. My mom still talks about how scared she was. I was always excited to cross it on our regular trips between Oklahoma City and my folks' home in the Tallahassee area. I was able to cross it again in 1997 -- not long before it was closed to cars.
