This reminds me of how Rock Island used E units on freights; usually on weekends when they borrowed them from their passenger fleet. Was EL doing the same thing?

Not by this date. The EL E8's were strictly in freight service except for the Cleveland-Youngstown local. All diesel passenger service in New Jersey was handled by NJT U34CH's.
