488 builds up steam before leaving Antonito
Just after this was taken the air line came uncoupled when it started going into the curve bringing the train to an abrupt stop.
A westbound freight starts its long slow climb to 10,000-foot Cumbres pass on a cold December day. This train had been preceeded by a flanger and spreader train to clear the way.
A late afternoon Cumbres turn crosses the old unpaved road below Windy Point.
Carlos Llamas and the 487 had spent the day hauling passengers, so when it came time to dump ballast west of Antonito the sun was getting low.

An afternoon Cumbres turn with 483 on the point blows for the Coxo crossing on the old dirt road from Chama to Cumbres. A helper is cut in ahead of the caboose.
DRGW 488 patiently waits its turn at Cumbres while the road engine takes water. Note the snowshed, now gone.
