It's 6:30 on a hot August evening in West Gladstone and three big C&NW C628's, 6713,6719,6708 are blasting along with 100 empties heading for another load at Empire Mine.
C&NW 6706,6729,6723 head up a ore extra of 100 loads bound from Empire mine to the Escanaba ore dock.
It seems every railroad that ever came up with a really great paint schem was merged. I a couple of the best looking C-628s have arrived on a freight.
Still magnificent despite the electrical downgrade for yard service her we get a little roof detail.
This one was not common around there and still had extra lights. It must not have lasted too long.
Here's another one. Not only are they beautiful they're clean and the "lobotomy" SP did on them doesn't show.
Two matched yard units look great.
Every so often the big Alcos would come chugging down to the tower, cross the ATSF & UP main and proceed east. We could almost imagine they were going to keep going but it was just a cut of cars ... (more)
I'm just guessing this was a recently retired Houston unit but I don't remember seeing it around before or after this shot.
This is the only one of the six-axle Alcos I ever saw with the hump control "thingy" (technical term, I could have just called it a generic "doofer").
