Also owning a 40d, the only real input I've got for you is that maybe the sodium light creep from off the frame was messing with things? Especially if you're just shooting jpg, you can expect a bit of red pixels, or other artifacts, which seem to be more obvious the longer the exposure. Think of it as color shift on film - the longer the shutter is open, the weirder things get. What ISO are you using?
