Mistake or Correction? I'm Perplexed!

Yesterday, this photo was rejected for awkward framing, specifically not conforming to the Rule of Thirds. Problem is, the subject does conform to the Rule of Thirds. Did the screener mistakenly reject this? Or does the screener think the foliage is unbalanced?

My first thought - too much on the bottom, and the left. Not much, but does look slightly awkward.

Agree with Mitch. Also, do not let the suggestion of the ROT in the rejection make you think that conforming to it means an automatic acceptance. The rejection is for composition and balance, not for violating the ROT.

I agree, the bottom and the left hand side need trimmed.

Thanks guys - good info. I wish the screeners would add a note with a bit more detail. I suspect they reserve that for more 'spectacular' photos.

Trimming the bottom left will move the subject away from the RoT, which I suspect isn't a problem, in this case. Hopefully.

I would probably tighten it up all around. The composition is not terrible as it is, but you could stand to lose some real estate on the left, top, bottom and even a tad on the right. Use the same cropping proportions....just take it in a bit and see what that looks like.

My thought is this is something that needed to be fixed in camera. Do you have a later frame with the train closer to the right side f the frame? I feel like the composition as is with the train further t the right would have got in

I would echo this comment. I can see there might be shadows creeping in on the right side, but I would try a frame with the train as far to the right before the shadow as possible.

Would this have a better chance? Would you guys change the crop at all, or leave as is on this shot?

I think there's still too much dead space, as originally pointed out. I think a crop like this will stand a better chance.

Yes, I do have an update. After some debate, I opted for a crop similar to what Doug suggested. The photo was accepted, I'm happy to announce!
