Then and Now
Saw these two pictures that were added on the same day at the same location but were taken 30 years apart. Amazing how things change and we never pay much attention while it is happening until you see a picture of days gone by....a lot of things different in this 30 year span and both pictures are taken almost at the same spot and angle. How many differences can you find? Reply to this post with your observations and or add other similar photo's such as this.

Last weekend, I shot Iowa Northern's "south job" (CRWA) at Edgewood Rd. in Cedar Rapids, IA. Forwarded the photo to an old friend of mine, who sent back this image from the early 1900's. He's not confident, but believes it's a William Baylis image. Perhaps someone one here will know for sure.

The good old days of a narrow-gauge line in East Germany, 1979:

The track & bridge were completely washed away in a catastrophic flood in 2002. Six years later, the line was rebuilt to a higher standard. This is how the same spot looked in 2012:

Apparently they brought in some fill and made the grade steeper when NS took over!

My shot was taken in 2009, so it is more of a "THEN" image, rather than a "NOW", although I have been there as recently as a couple of months ago. Whitehead Gulch is probably one of the most spectacular spots on the Durango & Silverton Line. Ben's shot was taken from the most eastern perspective and slightly higher than Anthony's shot. Anthony was more to the west and lower. My shot was farther west and significantly higher than either of the other guys. I think the most interesting composition is there. The real variable there is lighting. It is backlit most of the time. The only really good shot with light on the train that I have seen is this one from John West, during Railfest in 2010:

As you can see, John West also went "west" and high. I do think it is the best perspective.

Not sure if this counts as "then and now"; summer vs fall 2021, same GE series locomotive.

My original thought for this thread was sparked by a greater time difference to showcase how the "Times" affect/bring change to RR's but this will work too as its the same spot and a different season and mother nature does bring change to the scenery so, it works for me.

It sparked me to research the subject matter both here on RP and the internet. I visit this site at least once everyday just to see what has been added. Subjects that get photographed a lot offer up more chances of greater time spans and change, unfortunately its usually a decline rather than an improvement. The rare cases where there are improvements, such as the CW Depot I posted later in the thread, are also of interest to me at least. I just thought this thread would be a easy way to share subject matters that have been photographed multiple times, by different photographers at different times, for better or worse. I also had hopes that it would be a fun thread and that it would garner more response that it has at this point. I'm sure RP would like it if all the pics being compared were on their site but as long as we got a subject already posted on RP and compare with something that has not, post it, its getting clicks for them/RP.
