The best camera is the one you have with you, especially with something newsworthy like this. That said I would put the camera on my cellphone up against any point and shoot camera out there. The quality is outstanding.

That was taken with a DSLR? That makes it even more sad, the image quality is awful, quality that might be acceptable if it were a scan of a photo from the 50's.

And people were complaining about the grass in the NSCorp pics.....

A cell phone is better than a DSLR in the hands of someone who has no concept of how to use it. ISO 1600? F14 at 1/800 of a second? Wow.

Though then who knows what the F14 and 1/800 is about, I dont think I ever shoot above F8.0

I had 18 shots in the rejection list a few days ago until half of them fell off. Most of the rejections were of one shot, though.

Generally speaking, when you see really odd camera settings, it's because the photographer is using the camera in Program ("P") Mode. On the Nikons, that's like telling the camera: "Use whatever Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO combination you like." Although some refer to it as P-for-PERFECT, I virtually never use this mode. I rarely go above f8 myself, if only to prevent the inevitable dust spots on my sensor from appearing in my photos!

I used to use Program mode on my point and shoot Canon, it works fairly well on Canon, you can still set the ISO but it will pick the shutter speed and aperture. I use it occasionally on my DSLR, usually if I know im about to get cloud F'ed and I dont want to mess up my manual settings.

Same EXIF data as before for the most part, 1600 ISO, but look at that ballast. And for a roster shot by someone who I guess and hope works at Muncie, it's pretty bad. The lighting is bad and the noise and grain on the loco is unacceptable. It'shard to fathom how this shot got accepted by this site. Sorry, Chris and Chris, but this is a really bad example of what this site has been about in the past.

My biggest gripe isn't with him. I figured he worked with someone, either the EMD plant or someone else. It doesn't acquit RP for accepting those shots.

Photo in question not withstanding, you guys do realize that cell phone cameras are becoming quite popular amongst media outlets and amateur photographers.

Hell, the cover photo on Norfolk Southern's 2012 Company Calendar was taken with an employee's Blackberry...

I find this thread moderately annoying, because it comes off as a bunch of snobby DSLR owners whining because they spent $1500 or more on their equipment and had all they could do to get a quality photo accepted, and someone has the nerve to try it with a $90 cell phone.... get over yourselves.
