Default Underexposed

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=784909134

I was dinged for underexposed, lightened the image a bit without totally blowing out the gentleman on the right's face, and resubmitted. Above is the result. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I realize that there are areas of the image that are completely black but that is the beauty of night time photography with selective lighting.

Thanks.

Maybe some shadows/highlights adjustments, especially localized? It does both me that both heads disappear into their backgrounds. The black hats/hair/whatever is not helping you in this case.

The shadows on the sides of the faces don't bother me too much, in some sense I "expect" those or they fit or make sense. But the tops of the heads, don't care for how they look.

as J above mentioned, they are both "disappearing" into the loco. Either don't use as much contrast, use some slight shadow highlight, or don't make it so dark.

I opened it in PS to check the histogram and it is obviously underexposed but as you said, that's the beauty and point of night time photography. I increased the shadows +30 and still had the contrast I think you are looking to keep without blowing out the highlights on his face. Tastes may differ but I think its still possible to lighten the shadows and keep the feel of the photo. Nice shot regardless of what happens!

Thanks for the insight on all accounts. I suppose I'll give it another go in the morning.

Looking at the other images I have edited from this shoot they all do appear pretty dark. I guess that's my taste.

They don't care about your taste, they want someone to click on it and as nice as they are there darker then they need to be. If shot on film I can see the loss if detail in the blacks but wont fly here.
