Conductor killed on train in New Orleans

A train conductor was killed early today in what appeared to be an attempted robbery, the New Orleans Police Department reported.
The conductor, 52, was found shot to death inside a freight car around 12:30 a.m. near Marshall Foch Street and Florida Boulevard on the Norfolk Southern Railroad, said Officer Hilal Williams, NOPD spokesperson.

Damn.......decent neighborhood too. New Orleans has already lost east-west, west-east traffic to Shreveport & points north. This is gonna give the railroads another reason to move traffic from New Orleans.

This is silly. RRs run through all sorts of neighborhoods all over the country and face all sorts of impediments. A single robbery/murder is not going to shift traffic.

No kidding! Otherwise, East St. Louis wouldn't have any trains!

No it wont, what it WILL do, is make legitimate railfans more of a target from law enforcement and make access even harder for us.
Railroads are in some of the worst areas of the country as is, and things like this happen. It doesnt surprise me because NOLA is a cesspool of thugs and scum. But these people also exist in railroad locations in Memphis, Chicago, Atlanta, E. St Louis, LA and countless other places.

Sad news. I am still puzzled why the conductor was in the boxcar. I understand perhaps riding on the boxcar for a cut, but actually inside of it, that's sort of odd.
I don't think it'll necessarily make us targets, but instead it may cause just a general increase in security along the railroad in attempt to keep this type of stuff from occurring as frequently. I suppose, that in a way it could affect us in terms of harassment, but not directly, I wouldn't think.

Preliminary reports said he was in the boxcar, but it was later found out he was in the locomotive.
A lot of trains stop at that location heading to the Huey P. Long bridge waiting for traffic to clear, so they could cross it & in the opposite direction to enter CSX's Gentilly yard or Norfolk Southern's Oliver yard.

I law enforcment would get a handle on crime, things like this wouldn't happen. We accept this as normal when we should be crying foul about it. It's a few bad apples in a bunch that make it seem like New Orleans is a cesspool, but it's not. There are plenty of good people in NOLA.

Some of you guys are total assholes! Seriously, a man is killed and you are so selfish that you worry about service impacts to your photography!! Total "foamers"!! Maybe some self reflection on your comments here will make some of you guys understand why actual railroaders have such a distaste toward the hobby and people such as yourselves.

Gee, guys talking about their hobby on a forum that's about their hobby? Isn't it natural that people would apply the story, sad as it is, into how it could possibly affect their hobby? I can follow their logic train better than I can follow yours that *this* incident is the reason why railroaders hate "foamers."

Well Ween, you were one of the ones that I was not including in my asshole statement. However, if you read the last several postings about "I hope said carrier does not leave said terminal because of this incident. My point was simple actually, some of the posters on this topic were simply concerned about their own selfish goals over a human life. Yes, railroaders do read these forums and yes, they do have a distain taste toward this generation of railfans. With that said, I appologize if I offended you but, as said before, some need to do some self reflection.

I know I wasn't one of the people you were talking about, but you still didn't address my question: isn't it natural that people would discuss the incident through the eyes of the hobby?
I realize *some* railroaders don't like railfans, but I find it hard to believe a major factor would be over something like this. Trespassing? Yes. Putting themselves in danger? Sure. But because there wasn't an out-pouring of "Aww, man, that sucks" type of sentiment on a rail photography forum? Doubtful.

The problem is, "Off Topic", therefore anything goes Ween.. I expressed my opinion over "their" opinion. Who is right or wrong? That is for the Admins to decide. I stated my opinion on the shallowness of some and you stated your opinion on the "Type of forum" that this is. However, my OPINION is that an "Off Topic" situation holds no bars but, I still respect your opinion and take it into consideration.

Back on topic...............
Looks like the suspect was arrested after trying to shoot the arresting officer, too bad the cop didnt fire back, with luck the same results will be achieved after the trial.
