Union Pacific SD40-2s 1996 and 1896 take the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Torch Relay up Southern Pacific's "Sunset Route" through San Timoteo Canyon as the train heads east to, eventually, Atlanta, Georgia, for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. The last car on this train is a specially built "cauldron car" which is equipped to carry the Olympic Flame between those segments in which runners are not carrying the flame on torches. (This would be repeated by the UP again in 2002 for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.) This train will follow a circuitous route to get to Atlanta, as the Games are still months away and the Flame will be carried throughout much of the United States before arriving in Atlanta.
