Yet another Amtrak number 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, with a tale of woe ... Amtrak 3 departed Chicago IL on September 12, 2019, behind P42DCs 164 and 199. After making its station stop in Albuquerque NM, the train hit a boulder on Main 2 at MP 66.7 (Laguna NM). Lead engine AMTK 164 was damaged and set out at Acomita NM. Amtrak P42DC 199 was able to make track speed (up to 90 mph) for the 220 miles as it pulled the 8-car Chief by itself to Winslow AZ, where BNSF Dash 9-44CW 5518 was added. The train was 8 hours 52 minutes late when photographed passing through Placentia, California, on September 14, 2019. Just 29 miles to go to get to Los Angeles!
